I think you'd be hard pressed to convince me that technology (CGI) merely
drove the Matrix.

I think of The Matrix as a very well conceived and well written popular
culture War of the Worlds more than competently utilising CGI to its visual
potential. I also thought that the CGI used in some scenes of Lord of the
Rings was clunky and the cinematography in some shots was staccatoed ...
